UK’s Sam Miller leads final 23, last year’s champion Blake Battaglia out of the race

The field of this year’s WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond Main Event was reduced to just 23 players after Day 2. The tournament originally drew as many as 1,094 entries, but it is now just a few hours away from crowning its victor.

Day 2 was played on Sunday at the host casino. It kicked off with 236 hopefuls, who were led by Day 1A chip leader Michael Perrone with 649,000. While Perrone had a good advantage over the first stages of Day 2 action, the player could not secure a spot among the Day 3 survivors. He eventually busted in 24th place, good for a payout of $11,386.

As mentioned earlier, the Main Event attracted 1,094 contenders over its two starting flights. Its field thus generated $1,657,410 for the prize pool. The top 117 finishers will walk out with a payout, min-cashes starting from $2,718. Garrick Ballard became the unfortunate bubble boy. The player was eliminated in 118th place during Level 18.

There were a number of notables to bust on Day 2 without taking a share of the prize pool, including 11-time gold ring winner Maurice Hawkins, and WSOP gold bracelet winners Ben Keeline and Scott Bolhman.

Among those who made it to the money but failed to lock their seat into Day 3 were Ryan Phan, who finished 11th in the WSOP Main Event this summer, Ralph Massey, Will Bery, and Jeff Fielder, among others. Fielder was running pretty well over the course of Day 2 play, but eventually came in 31st.

Who Bagged the Day 2 Chip Lead?

As mentioned earlier, only 23 players will advance into the final day of action. They will be led by UK’s Sam Miller, who has just secured his first cash from the WSOP Circuit and is eyeing his first title from the series. The player built a solid stack of 3.535 million throughout Day 2, good for 88 big blinds at the beginning of Day 3 play.

Miller actually ended Day 2 of the tournament as the only player to pass the three million mark. Zachery Schneider, a one-time gold ring winner, bagged the second largest stack last night of 2.8 million. Two-time gold ring winner Nick Pupillo completed top three of the chip counts chart with 1.85 million.

Other notables that will return to the host venue later today to compete for the title and the gold ring include Giuliano Lentini, Anna Antimony (pictured), and Aaron Massey, among others. Action is set to resume at noon local time at the host venue. The remaining hopefuls will play down to a winner.

Blake Battaglia topped the event’s field this time last year for a cash prize of $332,020. The player entered this year’s edition of the tournament through Day 1A and secured a spot into Day 2. He ran pretty deep, but was eventually eliminated in 48th place, good for a payout of $5,005.
